Heat and air, the sworn enemies of most wines and winemakers, conspire to turn Madeira into one of the world’s most enthralling wines, as well as the most resilient.
During the 17th century, wine was often spoiled and needed to be fortified (by adding alcohol) to survive a voyage at sea. The seamen would load up on Madeira before making their way to the Americas, and noticed that the wines were getting better and better after a lengthy voyage through the tropics…
D’Oliveira is one of the oldest Madeira houses of the small Portuguese island. Dating back to 1820, they are now the only Portuguese-owned company producing this unique wine. The tradition at D’Oliveira has always been to hold back some bottles, creating an incomparable and outstanding library of back vintages.
We are delighted to welcome Luis D’Oliveira to the Club on 24th of October. He will guide us through some rare vintages of this legendary and indestructible desert island wine… And Deputy Head Sommelier, Emmanuel Cadieu has some more exciting news to share:
“We’ve just received some little gems from Madeira. This will be an exceptional masterclass. Luis D’Oliveira will take our members through different styles and grapes from the volcanic island.
Going back to 1907, this is going to be an epic masterclass. We will taste:
1997 Tinta Negra
1929 Tinta Negra
Emmanuel and the team look forward to this unique tasting and hope to see you there!
