We invite Members to unearth the story of Rioja’s wines under Sarah Jane’s guidance, through four exemplary estates and some superb vintages.
Spain’s pre-eminent wine region was the first to receive the highest DOCa quality category. Its contemporary history began with the arrival of Bordelais wine-making in the 1850s, led by the innovatory Marqueses, the Marqués de Riscal and the Marqués de Murrieta. The subsequent arrival of the railway between Haro and Bilbao was crucial in enabling exports and building the reputation of the region’s wines. Notably, it meant Rioja was able to send wine to Bordeaux to supplement production lost while phylloxera attacked its vineyards.
To illustrate the tasting, Sarah Jane Evans MW has selected historic wineries involved in Rioja from the early days. Sarah Jane will cover the stylistic changes down the years, the development of wine-making and the remarkable ‘Silicon valley’ power house of Haro’s Barrio de la Estación – the area around the railway station where the great bodegas established themselves.
The wine selections focus on the legendary ageability of Rioja, comparing vintages through the decades, and conclude with an update on how Rioja is changing today.
Sarah Jane Evans MW is a member of the Gran Orden de Caballeros de Vino and a Co-Chair of the Decanter World Wine Awards and we are very pleased to include her latest book ‘The Wines of Northern Spain’ in the ticket price.
I do hope you are able to join us.
